A girl on the verge of adulthood discovers some of life's harsh realities, in Radu Jude's chronically ironic debut feature.
Delia Cristina Fratila (Andreea Bosneag) has just won a car. She should be the happiest, luckiest girl in the world.
Dressed in her good clothes, she's joined by her parents en route to a film set to shoot a commercial and receive her big prize. But soon, the tedium of life on set sinks in and it's not long before the negatives of winning such a big prize become apparent.
Curator's Note
Radu Jude's debut feature film as director is a sly, side-eyed look at family life and the film industry that will either surprise you or elicit a knowing nod. The tone is different to the short films that Jude directed before it; a more cynical worldview surrounds the film, imbuing it with dark humour and a sardonic coolness.
The Happiest Girl in the World premiered at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival where it received the C.I.C.A.E. Award for excellence in arthouse cinema.
– Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)
A portrayal of family life, and a sly dig at both the filmmaking process and consumerism, this is a low key and utterly delightful little gem
