Riar Rizaldi Workshop FAQ

We seek emerging creative practitioners across disciplines - including filmmakers, visual artists, sound designers, writers, and digital creatives, art researchers, who are generally within the first 5 years of their current practice.

We are looking for individuals who have not yet locked into a rigid aesthetic, and who are eager to challenge the boundaries of how they currently work.

Capacity is strictly limited to 10 participants (including 2 dedicated places reserved for current university students).

We deeply value the time, labour, and vulnerability that goes into artistic development. To support your participation across the weekend, each selected artist will receive a $200 stipend.

A complimentary ticket to each of the Riar Rizaldi screenings (on 25 Oct + 26 Oct) will also be provided.

We are looking for applicants who connect with these three core ideas:

• Your Style and Interests: You should show a genuine interest in making non-fiction films, essay-style films, or experimental videos.

• Willingness to Grow: You need to be honest about where your work is currently stuck or what challenges you are facing. We care more about helping you think deeply about your ideas than making sure your technical skills are perfect.

• Teamwork and Feedback: You must be ready to dive into other people's projects, share your ideas openly, and give helpful feedback to your peers.

Day 1 - Deconstruction & Ideation: Rizaldi will open the session by sharing the conceptual scaffolding of his own practice and screening selections of his work. The afternoon will transition into a collaborative lab - a space for "cooking ideas" together, breaking down individual concepts, and expanding thematic boundaries.

Day 2 - Iteration & Critique Focusing on the act of making and re-working, participants will engage in a group critique and discuss the friction between intent and result. The workshop will close with alternative viewing strategies and an intimate Q&A session.
