A terrifying film set in the then-burgeoning internet and social media scene that predicts technologies alienating grip. Screening in 4K.

People in Tokyo begin to randomly experience a strange phenomenon when mutual friends and co-workers start to go missing. Connecting them all is a mysterious website asking them the same ominous question: Do you want to meet a ghost?

As the city becomes eerily empty, three strangers band together to solve the mystery, which leads them to an abandoned construction site, sealed shut from the world.

Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s dread-filled film is one of the finest entries in the J-horror cycle of the 90s and early 2000s. The film's prescient themes of social media malaise and disconnection hold a dark mirror to our overreliance on digital technologies, which push us further apart rather than bringing us together. Featuring unsettling cinematography from Junichiro Hayashi (Ring,1998), Pulse’s haunting themes and terrifying imagery linger long after the film has finished.

– Spiro Economopoulos (Guest Curator)

Pulse holds up as a true J-horror classic and - dare I say it - one of the scariest films of all time.
