Join us at ACMI for the 4K restoration of Angel’s Egg, from director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell).

A landmark of experimental anime, Angel's Egg returns in a stunning new 4K restoration, supervised by director Mamoru Oshii. Created in collaboration with celebrated concept and art director Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy), this experiential cult classic pairs Oshii's sparse, contemplative storytelling with Amano's dreamlike gothic imagery.

Set within the ruins of a mysterious world, the film follows a young girl guarding a precious egg whose purpose remains unknown. Rich in theological symbolism and atmosphere, Angel's Egg remains one of anime's most enigmatic achievements, its post-apocalyptic visions lingering long after the credits roll.

Curator’s note

Mamoru Oshii's sparse script resists a single interpretation, inviting audiences to find their own meaning within its dreamlike imagery and haunting symbolism.

While the girl is not a heroine in the traditional sense, her quiet struggle can be read through the lens of care, devotion and the burden of preserving hope. In a desolate landscape, she protects the mysterious egg she has found with childlike faith, nurturing it at all costs. Her struggle embodies care, hope and the protection of new life, while her fragile physical form, with oversized eyes and clothing that seems to swallow her whole, reinforces her vulnerability.

As the film unfolds, her faith is tested, becoming a meditation on what remains after innocence is lost: memory, grief and the faint persistence of hope in a world that seems to have exhausted it. Like many of the young women across this season, she must navigate a world shaped by forces beyond her control, finding meaning not through certainty, but through resilience in the face of the unknown.
