A retired actress retraces her extraordinary life as memory and cinema intertwine in Satoshi Kon's moving tribute to Japanese film.
A documentary crew visits retired actress Chiyoko Fujiwara following the demolition of the legendary film studio where she became a star. As Chiyoko recounts her extraordinary life, memories slip seamlessly into the roles she performed on screen, blurring the boundaries between reality and cinema. Spanning Edo-period Japan, the present day and imagined futures, her story unfolds as a search for a lost love that has shaped both her life and her career.
Curator’s note
One of Satoshi Kon's most accomplished films, Millennium Actress is both a celebration of Japanese cinema and a meditation on the relationship between memory, performance and identity. Through Chiyoko's recollections, Kon moves effortlessly between film genres, historical periods and Chiyoko’s lived experience, paying tribute to the rich history of Japanese filmmaking while exploring the ways cinema shapes how we remember our lives.
Like Perfect Blue and Paprika, Millennium Actress dissolves the boundary between reality and fiction. Here, however, that ambiguity is less unsettling than deeply romantic, suggesting that the stories we tell, and the roles we inhabit, become inseparable from who we are.
A loving homage to Japanese history, as well as a comment on the nature of filmmaking and films.
