Join us in the cinema for the 4K digital restoration of Hayao Miyazaki's classic, led by two of animation's most determined heroines.
While protecting his village from a rampaging boar-god, the young warrior Ashitaka is struck by a deadly curse. To find the cure that will save his life, he ventures into the sacred depths of the Great Forest Spirit's realm, where he meets San, a girl raised by wolves and fiercely devoted to protecting them. It's not long before Ashitaka is caught between San's fight for the forest and Lady Eboshi’s drive to expand Irontown.
Curator’s note
Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke is widely considered one of the best animated films of all time, featuring not only mythical god-like animals and tiny forest spirits, but some of the strongest heroines in animation history. San, the eco-warrior raised by wolves, is determined to save her forest and protect the wolves who’ve raised her. Lady Eboshi, a former slave and now leader of Irontown, is responsible for the former prostitutes who run the town’s Ironworks. These women are strong and determined. None of them fit into the regular mould society has set out for them. Each has their own mission in the story, staying true to themselves and their goals. In San and Lady Eboshi’s story, these women of Princess Mononoke represent the clash between the civilised woman controlled by society and the wild, unruly spirit that seeks to break free.
Beautifully constructed and painstakingly written, this is about as close to a perfect animated epic as you're likely to get.
