A tragic tale of a young married couple, Nang Nak was the first Thai film to earn over 100 million baht at the box office.

Based on one of Thailand’s most popular ghost tales, this retelling follows the marriage of Mak and Nak. Set in a rural village, Mak is conscripted into the Thai Army and set to fight in the war, leaving behind his heavily pregnant wife, Nak. Following a horrific battle and injury, he returns to the village and his wife but not all is as it appears.

Curator’s Note

The story of Nang Nak is a classic Thai folktale, that has been retold and revisited many times over the past century. Directed by Nonzee Nimibutr, this interpretation follows the marriage of Mak and Nak amidst a backdrop of 19th Century Thailand.

Through atmospheric cinematography and emotional hooks, Nang Nak has become a cornerstone of Thai Horror, that has resonated with audiences for decades. Exploring themes of Buddhism, superstition and the boundaries of life and death, it is a must see for fans of Asian horror. With plenty of suspense and a touch of gore, Nang Nak is a cautionary tale of undying love and devotion.

– Laurie Fletcher, Associate Programmer

Nang Nak is Thailand's biggest homegrown box-office hit. That's hardly surprising, as it offers both a tear-jerking tale of enduring love and vistas of blood-dripping corpses
