When unhappy housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) and her wisecracking friend Louise (Susan Sarandon) decide to take a break from their lives, they embark on a trip that leads to a tragic incident at a roadside honky-tonk. In an instant, their weekend "getaway" becomes just that as they flee across the American southwest with the police one step behind. A classic twist of the usual buddy-outlaw film, where men are most often the unlikely heroes, director Ridley Scott's classic 1991 film offers a thoroughly refreshing perspective.
Originally conceived as a low-budget, independent film by writer Callie Khouri, the screenplay was swiftly snapped up by heavy hitter Ridley Scott. The film made its grand premiere at the 44th Cannes Film Festival where it was selected as the Closing Night film. Thirty-two years later the film, has returned to Cannes where the new digital restoration in 4K made its premiere.
