A still from Overwatch (Activision Blizzard International BV, USA, 2015).

In 2016 it seemed like Overwatch went from a game no one had heard of to a global pop culture phenomenon overnight. Yet its success was about more than just the mechanics of an advanced first-person shooter. Light on narrative inside the game, players worldwide became invested in the colourful cast thanks to animated short films released as bonus content. From tragic backstories to star-crossed romances, the game’s developer Blizzard Entertainment made sure their millions of users weren’t just invested in playable avatars, they were invested in characters.
