The power to record, document, and film footage is now in everyone’s pocket. Mobile camera phones like those found in the Apple iPhone allow users to capture the world around them and share videos instantly. Along with the advent of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the camera phone was an important development in digital connectivity and the spread of social movements like the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. It has also become a modern tool for moviemaking, with filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh, Sean Baker, Jay Alvarez, Park Chan-wook and Michel Gondry shooting whole feature films with mobile cameras.
