Interviewee Paddy Garritty, Union Promotions, provides a brief historical picture of the early beginnings of the Trades Hall building in Carlton, in inner Melbourne. He talks about the origins of the Eight-Hour Day, the Trade Union movement and the establishment of the Trades Hall Council (a central hall for the skilled trades movement set up by the Freemasons) and the visions of this Hall as a facilitator for education, health and the arts for the working class.
