An anti-war love story set during the early years of World War II, ‘The Cranes Are Flying’ is a romantic drama about love, loss and recovery from catastrophe. When a young hospital worker hears that her fiance has been killed in the war, she is traumatised and refuses to believe it. Raped by a distant cousin during an air raid, she eventually marries him, despite feeling no love, and continues to mourn for her dead lover. A subsequent turn of events re-establishes her faith in life and her confidence returns. Winner of Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival, 1958
