“Summary: robbins’ excavator shield tunnelling system is a soft ground tunnelling machine. it consists of a dydraulically propelled shield with an excavator mounted in the top of the main section. there is no rotating head - the shape of the shield can be varies to suit the ultimate use of the tunnel. this film shows the machine in action during the construction of the detroit sewer tunnel in 1971”
