‘When Cathy Freeman carried the Aboriginal flag alongside the authorised Australian flag at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, she faced intense media scrutiny. Six years later, Australia held its breath and watched Freeman unite the country by winning gold at the 2000 Olympics.
