Documenting Australia

A still image from Documenting Australia

The identity of a nation can be crafted through the moving image. While Australian narrative features say a lot about us as a people, few forms can cut through to the essence of Australia more acutely than documentary.

In the post-war period, it emerged as one of the most important art forms in the local industry for its educational, political and social power. During the 1970s, documentary became an integral way for First Peoples to represent their experience on an unprecedented scale.

Decades later, documentary has endured and evolved as a way to amplify countless voices and ideas.
