Intoxicated detachment is the mood most easily evoked in singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin’s music video for Pool Party (2016). Featuring her drummer Tom Stephens as the co-star, it calls to a distinct 70s aesthetic with an Australian twist as it was filmed in Jacklin’s birthplace, the Blue Mountains. As hypnotic as it is uncomfortable, it follows two characters as they struggle to meet in the middle visually, physically, and lyrically.
