This collection of films has been generously donated by the Benalla Historical Society. The collection features moments in Benalla’s history and surrounding areas, including visits by the Governor of Victoria Sir Rohan Delacombe, ceremonies revealing various commemorative plaques, and the return of Ned Kelly’s cummerbund, thought to have been lost.
This film shows an interview with a member of the Benalla Historical Society, regarding a green, bloodstained sash or cummerbund worn by Ned Kelly at the Glenrowan siege. The sash was given to Ned at the age of ten by a family whose child Ned saved from drowning. Ned was wearing it at the Glenrowan siege when he was captured in 1880. A doctor who tended to his wounds took it off while Ned was unconscious and kept it. The family later donated the sash in 1973 to the Benalla Historical Society. It is now on display in the Benalla Costume and Kelly Museum.
