Stargate for Game Boy

Australia, 1994

Videogame

Ra, the vicious alien ruler of Abydos, is using Stargates find resource-rich worlds to conquer and enslave its inhabitants. Only the player can stop Ra by cracking the Stargates’ codes and closing them before they can be misused. Stargate, while based on the action sci-fi franchise, is a matching puzzle game, similar to Tetris but with a 3D aspect. Tiles are dropped into a Stargate and matching three tiles with the same symbol clears the tiles. The game is lost when too many tiles fill up the space.

Adding complexity is the “address”, a set of seven symbols across the top of the screen that the player must clear by stacking three tiles of that symbol. The game features two modes. Skill Mode has the player clearing addresses before the tiles fill up. The game’s speed increases as more and more addresses are cleared. In Battle Mode, a player can play against the computer or another player via a link cable to another handheld. Clearing stacks adds them to your opponent’s field, hopefully overwhelming them and winning the match.
