After crushing the Brits with a 4-0 sweep in the 2021 Ashes series, the Aussie team celebrated with the customary champagne popping. But not everyone could join in. Usman Khawaja was integral throughout the series, particularly in the fourth test when he made a century in both innings, but as a Muslim doesn’t drink alcohol. Skipper Pat Cummins told the players to put down the bottles so that he could rejoin the festivities. Khawaja retweeted the footage, heralding the moment as a step ‘in the right direction’ towards better inclusivity, subtly acknowledging that there’s more work to be done to address racism in Australian sport.
Read Osman Faruqi’s analysis of the moment on they Sydney Morning Herald.
The issue of celebrating with alcohol is not localised to Australia. Some are calling for fizzy water to replace champagne during celebrations, which is beginning to be seen as outdated.
