The fact that Peter is a more traditional ruler than Catherine is apparent in Emma Fryer’s costuming mood boards. Even the poses in the reference images for Catherine’s birthday dress are exuberant, featuring a daring 2008 runway look from Christian Lacroix, and the Rococo painting The Musical Contest (1755), by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. They are bold, bright, unapologetically feminine - in direct contrast to the aggressive animal prints and slogans of Peter’s hunting board. On the Dacha costume board, several historical illustrations are featured, and the simplicity of Catherine’s Dacha board suggests her costume was designed to match.
