Rather than thinking of space as a cold, dark vacuum, 2pt Interactive’s Heavenly Bodies embraces the warm, domestic interiors of 1970s Soviet space architecture. In the striking concept art above, you can see how the game’s approach to lighting draws on this period, and how the use of light in Heavenly Bodies doesn’t just illuminate but communicates the game’s tone.
Co-director Josh Tatangelo explained that the developers aimed “to capture the qualities of analogue mediums”, including grainy and overexposed archival footage and photography, as well as illustrative work that captures “its subject in a more gestural, interpretative manner”.
By considering the physical properties of vintage camera lenses in their lighting design, Heavenly Bodies captures the quality of the analogue media of the 70s, not just in the environmental design but in the game’s art direction overall.
