Thor: Love and Thunder isn’t just a heroic adventure – it’s also the story of Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) personal growth. At the outset, Thor is processing his grief following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019). During a period of self-reflection, he meditates in a robe that features a design by Gumbaynggirr / Bundjalung artist, Otis Hope Carey.
Hope Carey’s paintings are immediately recognisable for the way they refigure and adapt traditional Aboriginal art styles and symbols. His work also speaks to the emotional themes of the film directly: his work is deeply invested in spirituality, mental health, and connection to community and Country. In 2020, his work Ngalunggirr miinggi (Healing Spirit), which tells the story of the passing of his grandmother, was nominated for the Art Gallery of NSW’s Wynne Prize.
