LIMBO’s stark black-and-white colour scheme helps give the game its ominous and gloomy tone. Realised in an entirely two-dimensional plane, the game presents a dark and dangerous world, a purgatory animated by murky shadows and beastly silhouettes. There’s no particular narrative, just this menacing landscape bristling with spiders, traps and jagged machinery, which players must navigate in one long level.
Despite being fairly simple and straightforward to play, this minimalist puzzle-platform game succeeded in making esoteric and artistic games popular with broader audiences, defying the idea that indie games were ‘timewasters’ or commercially unviable, with LIMBO topping countless ‘Game of the Year’ lists and selling over 1 million copies worldwide.
