Shinjuku Thief’s latest playful tamper with the ACMI collection uses what might be the weirdest dried fruit advertising campaign ever directed by Fred Schepisi. Inverting the inherent misogyny of the original (see “A Hundred-Odd Years From Now” for how women from 2069 quickly become 1950s fumbling cake-baking housewives when they are newly-exposed to a cute bloke in their post-men environment), this new imagining of the narrative, in collaboration with choreographer and film maker Sue Healey, is as ‘Soylent Green’ as the revised colour grade. Alongside the edit and the tone set by the music, text from Daniel Schlusser, performed by Moira Finucane, help to reframe the original story into something not merely rich and strange, but ultimately somewhat tragic for poor raisinboy.
