This video features in a responsive display in the museum that presents the moments, stories and memes capturing the zeitgeist by going viral on the internet.
This is an example of #corecore, a TikTok trend of short, surreal videos that mash-up memes, news, films, anime and videogames. This video remixes footage found on the internet to critique its own bankrupt idealism, but other key #corecore targets include capitalism, overconsumption and inequality. Some highlight the loneliness and depression caused by our hyper-networked world, while others use scenes from films like Joker to project a distorted vision of masculinity. There’s no precise definition. Some liken #corecore to Adam Curtis’ experimental films, internet poetry or the work of moving image pioneer Nam June Paik. Others call them deepfried shitpost videos. Either way, they’ve been viewed over 400 million times.
