This iconic ensemble introduces Tilly as a character who enjoys the power and attention provided to her by the clothes that she designs and makes. The colour red is symbolic of passion, anger and danger.
The silk moiré taffeta fabric, which was highly fashionable in the early 1950s, resembles shimmering woodgrain. It was purchased by costume designer Margot Wilson in Milan more than 25 years before The Dressmaker. Wilson had been waiting for just the right moment to use the vintage fabric. Tilly’s bold and provocative appearance at Dungatar’s football game was the perfect opportunity.
