Burna Fone - Pania

Pania’s ‘Burna Fone’ places the West Melbourne artist in the global tradition of early 2000s R&B: fast cars, black leather, flip phones, a job to deliver some ‘cocoa butter’. By adopting the outlaw tropes common in hip-hop, Pania projects a nocturnal cosmopolitanism, elevating Melbourne to an international city alongside the likes of Miami or London. And like Pania answering the call, her followers answered her Instagram callout to be extras in the clip, which was filmed at Melbourne’s Miscellania. Featuring Pasifika fire-twirlers and synchronised choreography reminiscent of both Bollywood and early Beyonce, Pania mixes her Maori and Indian heritage with a global rhythm.
