Costume is intrinsic to creating a memorable on-screen character, but it’s also critical to situating the action in a certain place. In season two of Mystery Road (2018–present), the action takes place in Yawuru Country (Broome) and Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal Country (the Kimberly).

When Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) is brought in to solve a crime, his clothes reflect the rough and rugged detective work – and the landscape. Costume designer Heather Wallace hand-dyed Jay Swan’s singlets to match the rich reds and browns of the terrain, while the tough denim ensemble and dusty hat channel the imagery of lawmen in westerns.
