In Memoir of a Snail (2024), when Grace is sent to Canberra, her brother Gilbert is sent to live with the evangelical Applebys and their four sons in Perth. It’s a far cry from Gilbert’s dream of becoming a fire-breather in Paris like his father Percy. When the Applebys mistreat him – including an exorcism by the ‘Desatanizer’ – Gilbert channels his dream when he takes revenge…
Like everything else in the film, special effects are made from real-world items: Fire is crumpled yellow and red cellophane, smoke is cotton wool and raindrops are crafted from bubble-wrap.
Memoir of a Snail opens in cinemas October 17, 2024.
