In Heartbreak High, clothes help tell the story of who these characters are and how they move through the world. Each character has their own unique style – and that’s no accident. Costume designer Rita Carmody mixed local labels, vintage finds and op-shop pieces to create looks that felt personal, but still grounded in the world of group chats and after-school hangouts.

Darren’s costumes

Darren (James Majoos) is openly queer and non-binary. Their bold, stylish wardrobe mixes traditionally “masculine” and “feminine” pieces to reflect a confident, playful identity. From glitter to sharp tailoring, Darren dresses to express – and impress – on their own terms.

Quinni costume

Quinni (Chloé Hayden) is a character on the autism spectrum. She wears noise-cancelling headphones to help with sensory overload, and her love of colourful outfits, chunky rings and creative makeup is a way of showing how she feels. Actor and autism advocate Hayden worked closely with costume designer Rita Carmody to make sure Quinni’s look felt true – both protective and full of personality.

Amerie costume

Amerie Wadia (Ayesha Madon) dresses with edge, but compared to her classmates, her style is more pared back. That’s because her story is about finding herself, slowly building confidence as she figures out who she is and what she stands for.

Malakai costumes

Malakai Mitchell (Thomas Weatherall) brings his own energy to the screen. His look is easygoing but expressive, with sportswear, streetwear and cultural pride woven through his style.
