Celeste (2018) is a game about continuing onwards, even when things are tough. Created by Noel Berry and Maddy Thorson just before Thorson’s gender transition, the game is a metaphor for a young woman facing struggles with mental health and identity, represented as one great task: climbing a mountain. It’s famous for its satisfying movement controls, and notoriously challenging platforming.
Being a high-level speedrunner requires an incredible knowledge of the game’s environments and the quirks of its technical infrastructure. They memorise the game’s layout and experiment with controls to create unexpected advantages. Speedrunners will do almost anything to shave off a few milliseconds.
This interactive gives you the chance to face off against one of the world’s best. Most players take under an hour to complete the Forsaken City level of Celeste.
