The film begins with a dancer moving from classical ballet into dancehall, as one style slowly transforms into another. We see how dance travels across cultures, changing as people adapt it and make it their own.
Commissioned by The Vinyl Factory, the work grew from a long collaboration between artist and choreographer Cecilia Bengolea and dancehall communities in Kingston, Spanish Town and Bog Walk in Jamaica. At its centre is Shelly Belly, an influential dancer who guides us through the story.
Dancehall began in Jamaica in the late 1970s and 80s as a faster, more electronic style of reggae. It grew in neighbourhoods facing poverty and political tension, where street dances became places to gather. People came to be seen, compete and express themselves, circling powerful sound systems and moving for hours to heavy bass and heat. These gatherings became spaces of shared release, shaped by music, movement and community.
