In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found.
Not only did The Blair Witch Project scare up $248.6 million USD at the box office, it also created the first viral marketing campaign (which led many people to believe it was true) and ushered in the era of hand-held doco-style found footage horror films.
