Illustrates some of the difficulties involved in dealing with the problems of drug addiction. Examines the growing of opium in the Middle East, the history of drug use, the complex social patterns of drug use, the variety of pressures towards drug dependence in urban life, and the difficulty of preventing drugs from entering the United States. Elements of the drug problem in many overseas countries are also examined.
