Episode number 12 of Series “Chinese History”.
Highlights the confrontation between the ideas and scientific knowledge of modern western civilization and ancient Chinese civilization from the 15th to 20th century. Provides historical background to the early influence of the Jesuit missionaries in feudal China, the 19th century trade treaties of industrial societies such as Britain and America. Colonisation by Japan and Russia in early 20th century is also discussed. Includes archival film including the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912.
