The festivals, mostly of religious origin, celebrated each year in India including: Holi, the spring festival, marked by fights with colored water, open air performances of the Vedas, and dancing; Gokul Ashtam which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna; Ganesh, devoted to the god of wisdom; Dusserah, the autumn harvest festival when womanhood is venerated, books and tools of trade are worshipped in thanks for a livelihood and demon effigies are set on fire; Divala, festival of the goddess of wealth, a festival of lights and a special occasion for the trading community.
