Olivier’s version of Hamlet was described by him as “an essay in Hamlet”. The text has been dramatically cut, the order transposed in places, and some new implications worked into the action. Technically the film makes use of a number of camera devices, particularly the travelling camera. The characterization does not depart from the traditional.
