Divided into four parts. Discusses and illustrates the origins of picture writing; the writing systems of China, Mesopotamia, and Egypt; the emergence of the first real alphabet in Palestine and Syria; the spread of this alphabet to Greece and Rome; and the development of the Roman script through the Middle Ages until the invention of printing.
