Detailed study of the methods of a leading romantic artist, John Piper. In his studio, the artist outlines his work for the stage, and follows from beginning to end the selection of a subject for an aquatint and the stages in this technique. Landscapes in Yorkshire, North Wales and Portland are shown. The artist sketches a subject at Portland and later, in his studio develops the work as an oil painting. Narrated by John Ralph.
