Social and economic development of a cultural pattern in southern United States is traced in this film. Life on a southern plantation is recreated so that historical scenes can be related to their modern counterpart. Presents information on the organisation of a plantation; economy as dominated by one crop - cotton; effect of the Civil War on the economy and the influence of the past on the life of southern people today.
