An account of preliminary experiments carried out by scientists and engineers on the Severn Bridge Project 1946-49. Aspects of the work covered include: testing of foundation soils; echo-sounding of river bed; risks involved in building a suspension bridge; testing of model bridges with covered and open sides; final wind tests for oscillation on 1/100 scale model of proposed bridge.
