James Gowan and James Stirling discuss the design philosophy and building problems of the award-winning Department of Engineering, Leicester University. The lightly balanced tower of laboratories and offices, engineering workshops and cantilevered lecture halls were built on a difficult site to demanding functional and cost specifications.
