The Cathedral Engineers

Aesthetic appreciation and scientific investigation combine in this program, which highlights the architectural triumph of the Middle Ages. The engineering achievements of the cathedrals at Chartres, Bourges, and Beauvais are analysed by photoelastic modelling, and the distribution of forces and dangerous stresses are explained.
