Porteous betrays his love, Julia, and deceives his close friend Valentine when the two become rivals for the affections of Silvia, who flees to the forest in protest. Valentine becomes an outlaw pursued by Proteous and his page (Julia in disguise). Valentine eventually forgives his treacherous friend and marries Silvia while Proteous marries Julia.
