Sasha Grigoriev, a 13 year old boy is an habitual escapee from the bleak reformatory in which he has been imprisoned. Sasha escapes, taking refuge with his aunt who hands him back to the authorities. There he accidentally discovers the whereabouts of his father who is serving a long prison sentence in a camp near the Arctic Circle.
