L’Africaine, recorded live from the San Francisco Opera, is conducted by Maurizio Arena. The story tells how Vasco da Gama sails to find a new land beyond Africa and is shipwrecked on the African coast. He returns to Portugal with two captives Nelsuko and Selika. He has fallen in love with Selika but she finally sacrifices her life so that da Gama can marry his former love, Ines. Music by Giocomo Meyerbeer. Stars Shirley Verrett and Placido Domingo.
