Ingrid Bergman plays Paula, a susceptible and romantic minded young woman who marries Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer), whose suave manner conceals his murderous intentions and an obsession with finding precious jewels hidden in her London home. She becomes his helpless victim as he slowly drives her to the brink of insanity.
