When New York pianist Al Roberts (Tom Neal) embarks a transcontinental journey to join his girlfriend in Hollywood, he is overwhelmed by an intricate web of fate and circumstance. After trying to flee the accidental death of a driver who has given him a ride, Al steals the man’s car and his identity and continues towards Los Angeles only to be deterred by Vera (Ann Savage) who knows his secrets and how to exploit them.
