Based on Virginia Woolf’s novel, Sally Potter, directing her first feature, has made a ravishing film translation of one of the twentieth century’s most controversial books. The story travels across time and gender as Orlando, who begins life as a young Elizabethan aristocrat, lives through many centuries without ageing, and changing sex in the process. Tilda Swinton is utterly convincing as the young man/young woman who finally becomes one with her inner self and finds freedom as her material inheritance is lost. The film’s music and opulent ‘look’ make this one of recent cinema’s most rewarding experiences.
