Domini Enfilden (Marlene Dietrich) devoted her life to caring for her aged father. Upon his death, she decides to make a new life for herself and travels to Algeria. En route she meets Boris Androvsky (Charles Boyer), a strangely sorrowful man with a dark secret. They develop a friendship that grows into love but a chance encounter in the desert threatens all they hold dear.
